When producing a map, GIS data tends to be very segmented and angular. Though we use this data as a base for many of our maps, the aesthetic qualities of GIS data can be lacking. One of the methods we use to "clean" GIS data is to overlay the GIS data on USGS Digital Raster Graphs (DRGs). However, in our area the last time the USGS updated any topographic maps was 1972. So in addition to the DRGs, we use aerial imagery. The problem with aerial imagery, as many of us know, is that it can quickly add exhorbiant costs to a mapping project. We have found a way around this, using free USGS data on the Internet. All you will need in addition to the web browser you are viewing this with, is a raster-editing program, like Adobe Photoshop.
